What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine, also known as Regenerative and Anti-Aging Medicine is a medical specialty where the doctor looks at identifying and addressing the root causes of disease, rather than treating only the symptoms. The body is considered as an integrated whole rather than being divided into different medical specialties.

As Sir William Osler says,

“The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.

Sir William Osler, Canadian Physician and one of the founding fathers of Johns Hopkins Hospital, USA.

This is a more patient – centered approach in contrast to the traditional disease and symptom centric approach of Medicine. Functional Medicine specialists look at genetic, environmental and lifestyle interactions that influence long-term health and complex chronic disease.

As the picture of the iceberg shows, diseases like diabetes or heart disease may be what is visible above the surface, but the underlying cause could lie in specific imbalances in the body. Functional Medicine looks at achieving optimal health rather than relieving just the symptoms. If your healthcare provider looks only at the tip of the iceberg, it will rarely lead to long-term improved health outcomes.

Functional Medicine Specialists use advanced testing and detailed medical history to arrive at a treatment plan that is tailor-made for each patient. In addition to medications, Functional Medicine also recommends lifestyle change and supplements, hormones, and stress reduction. It is all about balance: nothing works in isolation.

How is Functional Medicine Different?
  • Patient-centered care. The patient takes an active part in his / her treatment.
  • Functional Medicine is advanced science-based preventive medicine. Traditional Medicine is excellent at treating acute diseases but this model of medicine has been found to be lacking when preventing chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.
  • Functional Medicine uses drugs along with lifestyle change and supplements, hormones and stress reduction. It is all about balance: nothing works in isolation.
